The Tennessee Valley Authority, the state’s transportation agency, said it will build a $500 million pedestrian bridge over the Tennessee River to connect the Tennessee Botanical Garden in Knoxville to downtown Nashville.
The $1.8 billion project will include a new interchange for buses and bicycles.
The bridge will be built over the river from I-64 to I-70.
The Tennessee Valley Parkway is already in its second phase of construction, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation said it is completing a second phase on I-75 to I -35.
The Tennessee Botanic Garden is a regional economic development center that helps attract the region’s most iconic and beloved plants.
The park will be a part of a new $4.5 billion regional park system that is scheduled to open in 2021, and includes more than 2,500 acres of green space, more than 4,400 miles of trails and over 100 national parks and monuments.
It also will include 1,000 miles of high-speed rail that will connect the region to Nashville, Memphis and other parts of the state.
