(AP)A record number of visitors from the U.S. and Canada flocked to the U: Maine, and it was a record for a state in the country.
Maine’s tourism department said Thursday that it expected a total of 10.7 million visitors from around the world this year, with tourists coming from Canada, the U, Australia and Mexico.
That is the highest number since records began in 1971, when Maine recorded a record of 7.9 million.
The state has also become the destination for tourists, as they are spending more time in the state.
Visitors spent $5.2 billion in the first six months of the year in Maine, up $500 million from a year earlier, the department said.
Mitt Romney won the state’s Republican presidential nomination in 2012 and Mitt Romney is expected to seek re-election in 2020.
The state’s economy has also been hit hard by the recession, with the unemployment rate climbing to 7.5% in March.
