Las Vegas, Nev.
— The first person to fall asleep at the wheel of a Tesla car during a crash will be eligible for $5,000 in federal compensation for each of his or her injuries.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says a crash in Las Vegas caused by a Tesla Model S driver was caused by “a combination of driver distraction, driving in a careless manner, and driving without a driver’s license.”
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says the crash happened in July and is being investigated by the NTSB, which is overseeing the investigation.
The Model S was driven by a woman who was “a very good driver” at the time of the crash, according to the NTSBs report.
The driver was injured in the crash and is recovering in a hospital.
